When am I going to use this in "real life"?
I hear this a lot from students taking this class. My first piece of advise is, this is an elective class. You signed up for it. If you don't like, see Mrs. McPeck and change your schedule. Really. Next, as technology is creeping its way in to more and more that we do on a day to day basis, you'll need to have a basic understanding of how to get around on a computer, including creating and editing documents.
Most businesses have gone to direct deposit for pay checks, meaning you never see a paper paycheck and most don't even hand out a paper copy of what you have been paid. It's all in your bank account. If you need to change anything on your account, you'll need to be able to get online and make those changes. Most companies also notify employees of important things through email. If you are unable to open, view, and compose an email you will run in to issues with communication at work.
High school and college classes may require you to type a report or research paper as part of a project. This class with give you the basic know-how to be able to complete these assignments. This goes for any office job you may have in the futures. You'll be on the computer all the time, creating and editing documents and spreadsheets.
Knowing how to navigate and use the computer and internet will help you find information online to help with everyday tasks or projects you may need help with.
Spreadsheets are useful in creating a budget for yourself and/ or family when you live on your own to make sure you're not spending more than you're making.
Most job applications are completed online now. You'll need to be able to fill out an online job application. Using word processing software like Microsoft Word will be a useful tool and copying and pasting large answers so that you don't have to type the same answer over and over.
The list goes on and on. Feel free to post below your thoughts and feel free to respond to other's responses. What are your thoughts now after reading these paragraphs? Do you agree? Disagree? Have anything to add?
